Training
As a member of WIRES, you are eligible to enrol into a variety of specialist training courses that aim to provide volunteers with more knowledge and skills to better rescue and/or rehabilitate a range of species. You also have access to enrol into a number of courses that will help you with further developing your skills to be successful in the different roles you take on within WIRES.

Becoming a WIRES Trainer (RICCs and Species Training)
To become a trainer with WIRES you need to complete the Train the Trainer course. After successful completion of this course participants become a WIRES Approved Trainer for Rescue and Immediate Care Courses and can begin playing a more active role in the coordination, management and running of your local RICC's.Please click here to enrol
Longer-term when you also have the species experience and skills required, you can also apply to become a Species Endorsed Trainer.

Please note: the WIRES Emergency Response Team (ERT) Course is mandatory to complete as part of the VERT position and is only available to VERT members.
To further support WIRES VERT members with understanding current WIRES emergency response procedures and how to best prepare for, respond to and recover from emergency events, WIRES has developed an online training course specific for VERT members, to address the roles and responsibilities of various responder positions throughout the organisation and the critical procedures relevant to the WIRES emergency response teams.
The course covers incident levels, roles and responsibilities throughout Head Office and Volunteer Emergency Response Teams, response agencies, veterinary collaboration, types of emergency events relevant to wildlife and WIRES, communication procedures, branch and personal preparedness strategies, search and rescue, triage and first aid, release considerations, volunteer support and wildlife support post-emergency.
The course takes roughly 7-9 hours to complete. If you are a VERT member wanting to access this course, please email training@wires.org.au.

To enrol into any of the below courses, please click onto the course link provided and follow the prompts.The course link will take you to the WIRES Training Site where you will need to log in using your personal log in details, which you would have received the last time you completed online training.
Once you log into the WIRES Training Site, at the bottom of the page is a green button that says ENROL ME. Click on this and you will be given access to that specific course.
If you cannot remember your username or password for the WIRES Training Site, please use the 'Forgotten Username or Password' link. You may need to check your spam/junk folder for the email to reset your details.
WIRES Emergency Response Awareness Course
The WIRES Emergency Response Awareness Course is suitable for non-VERT members and covers incident levels, roles and responsibilities throughout Head Office and Volunteer Emergency Response Teams, agencies and veterinary collaboration, types of emergency events relevant to wildlife and WIRES, branch and personal preparedness strategies, release considerations, volunteer support and wildlife support post-emergency.
The course takes roughly 4-5 hours to complete. This course is a self-enrolling course.
Understanding Pain in Wildlife
This 100% online course endeavours to address the impacts of inadequate pain management and how this implicates rehabilitation outcomes, the role of veterinarians in managing pain in wildlife, appropriate pain management strategies for wildlife rehabilitators and the obligations and responsibilities of wildlife rehabilitators to adequately manage pain for wildlife in their care.
We strongly encourage all WIRES members to complete this course to assist them in continuing to provide high-quality care for wildlife and to understand their obligations under legislation.
The course is roughly 2-3 hours in length and is FREE to access for all WIRES members.
This is a self-enrolling course.
WIRES Governance Courses
WIRES also offers a number of FREE online short courses that are based on internal organisational processes and procedures and are designed to equip you with more information for the roles you may take on within WIRES.
Species Coordinator Course - a self-paced course designed to help members acting as Species Coordinators and for those interested in taking on one of these positions. It includes the following chapters to equip you with necessary tools to be successful in the role of a Species Coordinator, and manage common situations you might encounter along the way:

WIRES State Council and Board Workshop - a self-paced course for all members who are in or interested in taking on Council or Board positions. It focuses on developing leadership and communication skills as well covering internal policies and procedures.

WIRES Roles and Responsibilities of Branch Executives - a self-paced course for all members in or interested in taking on Branch Executive positions. The course is designed to assist those on the Branch Executive to:
o Understand the roles and responsibilities of a Branch Management Committee.
o Identify the importance of, and provide an effective framework, for communication and decision making as a team.
o Understand the appropriate procedures and guidelines for conflict resolution at the Executive level.
